Is there a limit to how many custom crops can be in one area?

I have a moderately big orange farm but when I expanded it to 3 stories tall. About 1/3 of the crops disappeared. I cant interact with the missing crops. I also found that if I planted a orange seed (on land where the crops disappeared) and immediately broke it would give me oranges.

Wondering if this is a rendering issue on my end or something else.
